Success Comes Through Self-Discovery
I remember hearing a story about a guy who wanted to be a comedian, but decided to be an accountant instead. He said it was the safe choice. The good choice.
Years later, when he was laid off, he realized his decision to become an accountant had been based on fear the whole time, just wearing the costume of a good decision.
Unfortunately, getting laid off sent him and his family scrambling, because he was seeking a job while searching for who he was. Not an easy thing to do at the same time.
This cautionary tale teaches us something worth sitting with.
This familiar story comes in many shapes and sizes, because people are often discouraged, or afraid, to take their own journeys.
Nearly a decade ago, I made a career change from my 9-to-5. It came during a demanding season: my wife and I were caring for both a colicky newborn who needed frequent nighttime attention, and a sweet but energetic toddler.
Many nights I woke up at 2am in a cold sweat, questioning my decision to leave the security of a consistent paycheck. I can confidently say now it’s been one of the best choices I’ve ever made.
You can fail at what you don’t like, so you might as well take a chance on what you love.
The Pattern
Charting Your Course
There’s a natural progression on the path to personal and professional fulfillment, and it isn’t a straight line.
Confidence
You’re living according to your current story. It feels coherent, familiar, and workable. You know what works because it’s the status quo.
The Curveball
Something interrupts that story. A crisis, an opportunity, a realization that no longer fits your old assumptions. The curveball isn’t just the surprise. It’s the disorientation that follows, where your old instincts fail and you relearn how to connect with the ball.
Continuous Cycle
You don’t arrive at a final version of yourself. You continually revise your story as life presents new challenges and possibilities. That’s why I’m passionate about helping others take their own journeys.
Years of hands-on business ownership and marketing experience, working alongside some of the biggest names in leadership and personal development.
